Everything you need to drive confidently in Morocco — from paperwork and road rules to real fuel budgets, safety, and the routes locals actually recommend.
Do you need a special licence?
An EU, UK or North-American driving licence in the Latin alphabet is valid at pickup. For all other licences, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required. Traffic police can request the IDP alongside the national licence, so keep both in the car.
Road rules and speed limits
- Drive on the right; overtake on the left.
- Seat belts mandatory for all occupants.
- Phone use forbidden without hands-free.
- Speed limits: 120 km/h motorway, 100 km/h dual carriageway, 80 km/h open road, 60 km/h urban approaches, 40 km/h city.
- Radar speed traps are common on the A1 (Casa–Rabat), A7 (Casa–Marrakech) and around Agadir.
Safety on the road
Motorways are excellent. Secondary roads outside the Atlas are narrow and shared with animals, taxis and mopeds. Avoid driving between mountain villages after sunset; there is no lighting and shepherds cross without warning.
Fuel and costs (2026)
- Diesel: around 12.5 MAD/l (~€1.15/l).
- Gasoline: around 14.3 MAD/l (~€1.30/l).
- Motorway tolls: Casablanca → Marrakech ≈ 90 MAD (~€8), Casablanca → Tangier ≈ 220 MAD (~€20).
Parking
Every hotel we recommend has secure parking. In medinas, park at a designated gardien lot (5–20 MAD per stay) — a small tip beats a broken window.
Border-town and mountain-pass warnings
- Tichka Pass (N9) to Ouarzazate: closed after heavy snow between December and February. Check the weather.
- Chefchaouen loop: steep and narrow near the medina. A compact car is much easier than a 4×4.
